In the 1920's, wisents became extinct in the wild, and only a few dozen remained in zoos. They are successfully reintroduced in the wild, thanks to a smart scheme to make most of the limited genetic pool. Nowadays there are about 3000, all descending from 12 individuals. In 2007, Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland was the first Dutch park to reintroduce them.
